As the beginning of the meet approached, the weather was cool (about
67F), but threatening storms.
The first event was the mile with 30 athletes in two heats. After the
mile was completed a heavy thunderstorm took place. At that point, the
meet was canceled.
Amy Thomas Elder broke one of the oldest meet records in the women's
mile with a 5:34.3.
The competitors ranged in age from 11 years to 49 years.
